Note: Elizabeth’s parents moved their family to the vicinity of Spencertown, NY when she was about ten years old, so it was probably there that they were married. They were listed at Greenbush in Rensselaer County in the 1790 census and Jonathan leased land at Nassau the same year. The Richmond Genealogy states that the Shepherds lived at New Bethlehem, "where they died." New Bethlehem was the name given to the area surrounding the Baptist Church, half way between Greenbush and Nassau, which later became the village of Schodack. The 1800 census of Greenbush again lists the family. The records of early cemeteries of the area, which are housed in the little public library in Nassau, do not include the names of Jonathan nor Elizabeth.
