Note: Edward Garfield, born around 1575, was the founder of the Garfield families in America, and the ancestor of both President James A. Garfield and Brigham Young. He was noteworthy for the great age which he attained, and the remarkable personal and public activities he took part in when well past the prime of life.
The antecedents, origin and early history of Edward Garfield prior to his arrival in the colonies is unknown. The American Garfield family probably descended from a respectable yeoman family which settled in the sixteenth century at the adjacent villages of Kilsby and Ashby St. Ledger in Northamptonshire. In 1543 the wills of Thomas Gardfylde and Robert Garfyld were recorded in the village of Kilsby. In 1568 the wills of Robert Gerrfyld or Geyfill of Ashby St. Ledger was recorded. The Lay Subsidy rolls supply the earliest known mention of the name. From these records we learn that "Thomas Gerfelde of Ashby Legers in 1524-25 was assessed in goods at..." The villages of Ashby St. Ledgers (then belonging to the Catesby family) and Kilsby are contiguous. While there is some doubt, Edward Garfield's ancestors probably came from Ashby St. Ledger as there are more records of the family name and they occur earlier than in Kilsby.
Edward must have been between 55 and 60 years of age when he came to Massachusetts. He first appears in the New England records as having been made a freeman on May 6, 1635. He was one of the earliest proprietors of the town of Watertown and lived there the remainder of his life. He was in the lists of original grantees of land in that town dated July 25, 1636. Records show grants of thirty acres in 1636, and seven acres in 1637. Deeds recorded between 1651 and 1662 show an additional 100 acres of land which he owned.

There is probably some relationship between Parley Hewitt and Joseph Hyde.
