Note: William Denison was very well seated in Stortford, but hearing of the then famous transportation to New England, unsettled himself and recalling his son, Daniel from Cambridge, removed himself and family in the year 1631 to New England and brought over with him his sons, Daniel, then aged about 19 years, Edward and George, leaving his oldest son, John, who had also been bred at Cambridge and was then a minister, married, with a good portion, and who lived about Pelham or in Hartfordshire, not far from Stortford, where they were all born. He came with Rev. John Elliot. He was Vicar of Standon, County Herts, 1660 to 1670. William Denison brought with him into New England a very good estate and settled himself at Roxbury, Mass., and there lived til Jan. 25, 1653, when he died, having buried his wife about 8 years before. [History of Stonington, New London, CT] He was a malster by trade.
William Denison sailed with his wife and sons Daniel, Edward and George on the ship "Lion". His oldest son, John, remained in England as a major in Cromwell's army and later served as deputy governor of Cork, Ireland. The Denison family arrived in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1631. Here William served as a deacon in the First Church of Roxbury and was made a freeman of the colony on July 3, 1632. In 1635 he was appointed as a representative to the General Court of the colony.

Christening: 3 FEB 1570/71 Saint Michaels, Bishops Stortford, Hertford, England
Death: 25 JAN 1653/54 Roxbury, MA
Note: Although the records give no clue to his occupation, we can assume that he was a farmer. As the records do show that he was involved in several land transactions, it is probable that he was a yeoman, one of many farmers who were able to enjoy some measure of prosperity in the sixteenth century.
Even so, life was harsh and uncomfortable. As John's son, William, grew up in Bishop Stortford, such basic things as chimneys, permanent bedsteads, glass windows, wood floors, and pewter tableware were not universal. More likely, the table, often merely a board set across trestles, was set with wood, leather, or horn utensils. Chairs were not widely used and were usually reserved for persons of importance. The rest of the family sat on stools or benches. Coffee and tea were still relatively unknown as were the pots, kettles, bowls and spoons later developed to serve and drink them.
John Denison died of plague in Bishop Stortford on December 4, 1582.
