Hewitt, Asa (b. 16 OCT 1761, d. 15 JUL 1824)
Note: Asa and Mary resided in Stafford, Conn. after their marriage until about 1805, when they moved to Oneida Co, NY and settled in the Town of Paris for a few years. By the end of the War of 1812, they were in Orwell, Oswego Co, NY where Asa was active in civic affairs. He was elected Assessor and served as Inspector of Schools.

Shortly after 1820, the family continued westward and settled in Keepville, Erie Co, Penn. where they remained.

[A note on the records of the Keepville Cemetery says, "Asa Hewit, born 16 Oct. 1761, and died 5 July 1824, Revolutionary War Soldier, known to have been buried here but no marker." The Connecticut Revolutionary Polls show that he served in Capt. Titus Watson's company, Col. Charles Burwell's battalion of the Connecticut militia. [Rev. War Pension Applications S43657, VT Green Mt. Boys]

A family history of son, Daniel Hewitt, written in 1898, by his great grandson, Loren Morgan Hewitt, stated that Daniel and his father, Asa, enlisted at the time of the War of 1812. Asa would have been 51 years old. His sons Walter, Daniel, Parley and Asa did serve during that war, but it is doubtful that the father, Asa, participated in the War of 1812.

Hewitt, Asa (b. 25 JAN 1789, d. 11 MAR 1869)
Note: When Asa was a boy, his parents left Conn. and settled in Paris, Oneida Co., New York where he grew up. During the War of 1812, he enlisted on Sept. 1, 1813, and served for 30 days as a substitute John Reynolds. He was a private in Capt. Smith Dunlop's Company, Major Parkhurst's battalion of the New York militia. After the 30 days, he was discharged at Henderson's Harbor on Lake Ontario. He was described as 5' 11" tall, fair complexion and blue eyes.

Shortly after their marriage, Asa and Orpha settled in Keepville [now Albion], Erie Co, PA near his parents and some of his brothers, where they lived for almost 30 years.

In 1848, they moved to Byron, Ogle Co, Illinois where they remained. At the close of the Civil War, the town of Byron erected a monument dedicated to local men who participated in all American wars. Asa's name was inscribed on the monument for his service in the War of 1812.
