Note: 1841 Montgomery, Wales census lists Evan Lloyd living with Cadwalader and Ann. Evan was probably a brother of Cadwalader. Both were born in the same county and both were blacksmiths.
Cadwalader and Ann probably came to America sometime between 1842 and 1848. They lived in Russia, Herkimer, NY from about 1847 to 1852 and came to Wis. sometime between 1852 to 1856.
On the 1850 census for Indian Lands, Marquette Co, Wis:
Richard "Loyd', age 40, born in NY; Ann, age 39, born in NY; James, age 19, born in NY
It may be a coincidence, but is in the same area as Cadwalader lived a few years later.
In 1850, he was working as a blacksmith in Russia, Herkimer, NY.
Living close was William Lloyd, age 35 born in Wales; wife, Ann, age 35 born in Wales; Simon, age 9, born in NY; Mary, age 7, born in NY and Jane, age 5, born in NY
In June 1861, an ad appeared in the Marquette Weekly announcing the opening of the new blacksmith shop. Open from 4:00 in the morning until 10:00 in the evening.
================================
The Welsh ancestors who came to America in the 1800s probably sailed from Liverpool, England. In 1841 it was not uncommon for a trip to take three months. However, sailing ships from Liverpool to New York normally took 20 days to six weeks and steerage costs between three and five British pounds. Steamships took from 10 to 15 days and third class cost eight pounds, eight shillings, or approximately $33.00 (the pound then equalled to about $4, the shilling about 20 cents).
If your ancestors went to the upper Midwest in the upper Midwest in the mid-19th Century, they probably landed in New York, took a steamboat to Albany, then a railroad to Buffalo where they caught a boat which took them through the Great Lakes to Racine, Wis. (Racine was one of the earliest Welsh urban settlements in Wisconsin.)
There was a saying among the Welsh in America: "The first thing a Frenchman does in a new country is to build a trading post, and American builds a city, a German builds a beer hall, and a Welshman builds a church."
