Note: Benjamin was the editor of the Akron Register-Tribune in Akron, Iowa. He became a deaf-mute following a severe illness as a youth. He received his early education at the School for the Deaf at Council Bluffs, Iowa. He later attended and graduated from Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C. which was founded by Alexander Graham Bell and graduated in 1892. He first tried to make his fortune as a ranchman in Montana, but soon tired of that kind of life and moved to Akron, Iowa in 1893. In 1897, he married Cora Rexford, who was also deaf.
