Rodger, Donald A. (b. 6 JUN 1924, d. 30 NOV 2005)
Death: 30 NOV 2005 Westfield, Marquette, WI
Note: Melba Lucy (Nelson) Rodger, age 76, of Oxford, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at her son's residence near Westfield. Melba was born March 29, 1932, in Beaver Dam, the daughter of Samuel LeRoy and Sarah (Tillema) Nelson in the South Trenton cheese factory in South Trenton Township, Dodge County. Her family moved to Oxford in 1941, for her father's employment in making cheese. Melba loved horses and in her teen years along with the racehorse, Rosie, won many races. In 1956, she and her friend, Arlene Smith sang on the WPDR Portage radio as the "Neenah Valley Harmonettes." They even sang at the dedication of the Wisconsin River Bridge on Highway 82. Melba had the gift of singing and could be heard at many area ceremonies and events. She loved sharing folk songs with her granddaughters when they were little. A favorite being "Froggie went a Courtin'." On June 12, 1953, she married Ronald Charles Rodger. To this union was born a son, Derk LeRoy Rodger. Melba worked as Marquette County UW Extension Secretary for 38 years, (an icon of the Marquette County Fair), Village of Oxford Treasurer 27 years and Oxford Fire District Secretary-Treasurer for three years. She also had worked for Freed Osterman Glove Factory and in the Oxford High School Office. Melba loved people and touched many lives. She was a 4-H leader for 27 years and was a member of the Oxford Fireflies Auxiliary. She received many awards, "Friend of the Fair," "Friend of 4-H," "HCE Homemaker of the Year 1996" and "Montello FFA Honorary Member". Her granddaughters led her to become a Westfield Pioneer fan and Booster Club supporter. She became known as "Grannie" to many athletes there and became famous for her camera capabilities. She had great artistic abilities and was a talented craft person. She shared this with many groups, clubs, family and friends. Melba was a very generous person, always willing to give rather than receive. Her knowledge of area history was huge and will be greatly missed. Melba is survived by her son, Derk (Melody) Rodger; granddaughters, Sarah, Chelsey and Trisha Rodger, all of Westfield; niece, Bonnie Weiler; and brother-in-law, Chris Zillich of Mokena, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ronald; brother-in-law, Donald Rodger; and sister-in-law, Lucretia Zillich. She is also mourned by other relatives, neighbors and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at ST. JOHN EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH in Oxford, with the Rev. Brian Rohde officiating. Burial will be at the Oxford Village Cemetery.
