Note: Came 20 March 1630 on the "Mary & John" sailed from Plymouth, England, with 140 passengers. The families were all recruited by the Rev. John White of Dorchester, Dorset. Nearly all of these families came from the West Country of England, i.e. counties of Somerset, Dorset and Devon. The ship landed in New England, on 30 May 1630, two weeks before the Winthrop Fleet arrived. These people founded one of the first towns in Massachusetts, Dorchester, 1630, and one of the earliest in Connecticut, Windsor, five years later. About half the Church removed to Windsor, Conn. during 1635 and 1636.
Rev. John Warham was the first Elder of a church who came into the Colony in 1636. His church had been located with him as their pastor, at Dorchester, in Massachusetts--but in 1636, the minister and church all moved to Windsor, where he lived until April 1, 1670, when he was called from his people by death; he however lived to see not only his church, but many others in the colony prosperously located. He had lived to witness much of the dense forest he found there in 1636, by the industry of the good men he brought with him, removed. He left a large estate in lands to his family, and saw some of them happily located in life, before his decease. He had preached at Exeter, in England, before he came to New England. He had four daughters.
Rev. Warham graduated at St. Mary Hall, Oxford (BA Nov. 14, 1614; MA May 18, 1618), and ordained at Silverton, Devon on May 23, 1619. Rev. WARHAM was minister at Crewkerne, Somerset, until he was removed about 1627 for his Puritan views. Pastor at St. Sidwell's, Exeter, Devon, England 1630. Rev. John WARHAM and Rev. John MAVERICK were both ministers at Windsor until the latter's death in 1637. Rev. Ephraim HUIT arrived at Windsor in 1639 to assist Rev. WARHAM. In his will of 1623, John's father implies that John was then single with the phrase "in case he should marry." The purported will of Rev. John WARHAM was rejected by the court Nov. 23, 1670, and administration of his estate was granted to his three sons-in-law. The estate had been inventoried on Apr. 30, 1670 at £1239.10.00. John was married first Jun. 8, 1625 at Stoke Abbott, Dorset to Susanna GOLLOPPE, who could have been the daughter of Gybbes GALLOP who married John's aunt Magdalen as her second husband. Susanna, who died in 1634 at Dorchester, MA, was the mother of his first five children. Married second in 1637, probably at Windsor, CT; and third Oct. 9, 1662 Abigail SEARLE (d. May 18, 1684, Windsor, CT), widow of John BRANKER.
