Note: Charles enlisted in the Civil War on May 1, 1861 with Co. E, 3rd Wis. Infantry from Leroy, Wis. He was wounded on Sep. 17, 1862 and transferred to Veteran Reserve Corps on Dec. 12, 1863.
In 1864, he married Mary Ann Burnham and had a son who died in infancy and a daughter, Alice. In 1876, when Alice was 11 years old, Mary Ann died. He remarried Francis [Coon] Saunders, a widow and they had 3 more children; Pearl, Roy and Ellison.
