Haskins, Benjamin Gifford (b. 23 OCT 1872, d. 24 NOV 1933)

PJ: 11/25/1933: Benjamin G. Haskin, funeral director at Bemus Point for thirty years, died suddenly yesterday morning at 2 o’clock at his home, aged 61 years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lena Pickard Haskin, a daughter Miss Edith Haskin, and a sister, Mrs. George W. Thompson, all of Bemus Point. Mr. Haskin was born in Ellery, October 23, 1872, a son of the late Israel and Abigail Gifford Haskin. He had spent his entire life in that community. He had been a funeral director for about thirty years, being associated with Thomas P. Mattison in the undertaking firm of Mattison and Haskin at Kennedy. He was actively identified with the Bemus Point Methodist Episcopal Church, which he served for many years, both as a member of the Board of Trustees and the Official Board. He was also a member of the Village Board, and a former member of the Board of Education, serving at the time of the erection of the new school. Mr. Haskin was a member of the Bemus Point Lodge, I.O.O.F. and Sylvan Lodge, F.&.A.M. at Sinclairville. The funeral will be held Monday at 2 o’clock at the Bemus Point Methodist Episcopal Church.....PJ: 11/28/1933: The funeral of Benjamin G. Haskins, well known Bemus Point funeral director, was held yesterday afternoon at the Bemus Point Methodist Episcopal Church, preceded by a prayer service at the family home, Rev. Dr. Lucius H. Bugbee of Jamestown officiated, assisted by Rev. Emerson H. Jones of Bemus Point. The bearers, all relatives were: Charles Haskins, Ora Haskins, Claude Haskins of Maple Springs, George Ingerson of Jamestown and Frank Putnam and Leroy Hale of Bemus Point. Assisting were the following funeral directors: David Lincoln, Harry W. Boyd, Louis M. Partridge of Jamestown and Fred Meyer of Randolph. Other funeral directors in attendance were: Samuel T. Bowers, Edgar L. Powers, Frank Costanzo of Jamestown; Guy E. Stanley of Frewsburg and Thomas Mattison of Kennedy with whom Mr. Haskins was in partnership. Friends from a distance attending the service were Mrs. A. W. T. Ogilvie and son Ira of Chicago; Richard Evans of Utica, NY; Mrs. Emma Briggs of Russell, Pa.; and Mrs. Hannah Ferguson of Conewango. Members of the Bemus Point Lodge IOOF attended in a body, also the village board. Representatives were also present from Sylvan Lodge F. & A. M. at Sinclairville.

Gifford, Abigail Jane (b. 11 JUN 1850, d. 13 JUN 1917)
Note: PJ: 6/11/1917: Bemus Point: Mrs. Abbie Gifford Haskin, wife of Israel Haskin and a prominent resident of the village for many years, died at the family home this morning at 10:15 o’clock after an illness of four weeks duration. Mrs. Haskin was 67 years and 14 days old and was married fifty years last Christmas Day. Relatives surviving are the husband, Israel Haskin, one son, Benjamin G. Haskin, one daughter, Mrs. Izora Thompson; a granddaughter, Miss Edith Haskin, a niece, Mrs. Delilah Hale; a nephew, Frank Putnam and a cousin, Miss Emily Horton, all of Bemus Point. Mrs. Haskin became a member of the Methodist Church when a young woman, joining the Methodist Church at West Ellery and was transferred to the Bemus Point Church at the time of its organization. The funeral will be held at the Methodist Church, Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock preceded by a service at the home. The home service will be private because of the serious illness of the husband who has been confined to his bed for some months. Rev. Oliver Gornall will officiate at the service.
