Wally was born in Wausau, Wisconsin on September 16, 1917, the oldest of four sons of Walter Drew and Christina (Noren) Drew.
He graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1937 with a degree in journalism. World War II interrupted his advertising career. Wally, a war hero, was awarded the Bronze Star. He participated in the Normandy landing, fought in seven battles across France, and as a Major in the Army Corps of Engineers, built the bridges that allowed American troops to liberate Paris. He was among the first American troops to enter the concentration camp at Buchenwald, an event that made a lasting impression on him throughout his life.
Just before embarking overseas, on January 26, 1943, he married Katherine (Kay) House. They enjoyed 48 years of happiness until her death in 1991. After the War, Wally resumed his advertising career in New York. Over the next twenty-five years he held senior management positions with Bristol-Myers, Cunningham and Walsh, and Coty, Inc. In 1968 he became the managing director of Revlon International in Europe. He retired to Santa Barbara in 1971. Wally's retirement was short-lived, he started a new career as a stock broker with Smith Barney and an extraordinary life as a community activist.
His first involvement was with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara, thirty ago. Since then, until a stroke in 1998, he spent endless hours for numerous charities. He served on the boards of directors of the United Nations Association of the United States of America, Lobero Theatre Foundation, Santa Barbara Arts Council, Work, Inc, The Santa Barbara Symphony, Sansum Medical Research Institute and Piney Woods Country Life School in Mississippi. He served on the Foundation Board of Santa Barbara City College and was Co-Chair of their 25.4 Million dollar capital campaign. Wally was co-founder of the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation and a Senior Warden at All Saints-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church. He has served on numerous committees of the United Way.
Over the years, he received many honors including The 1984 distinguished Community Service Award from the Anti Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, 1986 Man of the Year, 1984 Santa Barbara News Press Lifetime Achievement Award, 1997 News Press Volunteer of the Week, in 1999 Sansum Medical Research Institute named Wally Community Hero, and in 1999 he was honored at the Red Feather Ball with the Community Excellence Award.
He and Ursula Henderson, MD met while serving together on the Board of Directors of the Santa Barbara Community College Foundation and were married on October 3, 1992, enjoying travel, great adventures, and happiness.
