Note: Harold Gaffney plans on celebrating his birthday this year the same as every other, despite what will be the momentous occasion of turning 88 on 8/8/08.
"I'm going out to eat," said Gaffney, who lives in rural Oxford.
"It's no big deal. It's just another day," he said.
The retired farmer will dine with members of his family. Gaffney and his wife, Velma, have four children, 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Gaffney said that the birthday that stands out is his 80th, for which he and Velma traveled to Ireland. The couple said the Gaffney name is Irish, and they visited cemeteries in search of their ancestors. Velma said clam chowder served with shells and driving the rental car on the wrong side of the road made the trip memorable.
Routine birthday celebrations often involved a family potluck meal to celebrate.
Now more often they gather at a restaurant for meals, Velma said.
Gaffney has lived in his home on Gillette Avenue in rural Oxford his entire life. The house and farm is the same residence his parents owned and occupied.
"I was born in his house," he said.
Gaffney, who has been retired for 10 years, spent his life as a farmer, raising crops and dairy cows.
"Farming was good work, but hard work," he said.
He stopped milking cows in 1985. He also served as a janitor within the Wisconsin Dells School District, leaving in 1998.
In his free time, Gaffney enjoys driving around and going out to eat. He reads Westerns and the news.
Velma said her husband used to repair lawn mowers as a hobby, too.
Gaffney and Velma will celebrate their 61st wedding anniversary in September.
"We think we have a good life. We made well. We were pretty poor when we started out," Velma said.
