Death: --Not Shown--
Death: AFT 1880 Prob. Wis.
Death: 9 JAN 1876 Camillus, Onondaga Co., NY
Note: [GERMAN GenForus] "Walter German was <NOT> hanged nor was he dishonorable discharged. This is all an "old wive's tale. Even though this story appears in many published histories of North Norwich & Chenango Counties, an examination of New York State Militia records show no such incident. (See Meola, Grace: Information in GERMAN Family Folder, Chenango County Historian's Office, Norwich, NY).
Walter was made a Lt. on 17 Mar 1812 and Captain on 17 Mar 1814. Ho was honorable discharged on 15 June 1815 according to the Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army.
He was appointed Postmaster of North Norwich by the US Postal Service on 15 May 1817 and was Postmaster until 21 June 1819 (impossible to do if deceased).
After his return home from the War, Walter helped in his father's store. In 1816, he decided to start a business for himself. He purchased a lot from his father and erected a store building in 1816. The years after the War of 1812 were hard; money was scarce. No one could pay bills and Walter lost his store. The Edmund PER LEE Justice Docket which can be seen in the Rexford Street Museum of the Chenango Co Historical Society, lists many cases where Walter tried to collect debts owed to him. It has been conjectured that someone who owed him a debt started the rumor that he was dishonorably discharged.
Walter's wife, Harriet (Ostrom), died Nov 4, 1819 at the age of 22. Walter settled his affairs & went West about 1820."

Just before the Civil war, H. H. Hall found money for Capt. Chase and Alonzo Pelton to put in operation a soap factory, which they continued to run till April, 1864, when they sold to J. D. Humphrey, of Galena, Ill., who operated successfully until Jan. 12, 1883, and then sold to Haskins & Wallan, who carried on the business until December of that year, when Mr. Haskins purchased his partner's interest; the concern then going under the name of Leroy Haskins' soap and candle factory.
