Note: James Gaffney immigrated to the U.S. in 1840 or 1843 from Sligo, Ireland. Sligo, Ireland was a major port at that time, so it's uncertain whether he was born in Sligo or whether he only boarded a ship in Sligo. He filed a Letter Of Intent to become a citizen in July 23, 1844 in Erie County, Penn. He probably filed his Letter of Intent about the time he and Sarah were married, but he never completed the process in Pennsylvania. He probably came to America through the port at Philadelphia, New York or a Canadian port like many other Irish immigrants. Sarah Hewitt's brother, Luther, ran a boat on the Erie Canal and it's possible that is how Sarah met James.
James, Sarah and their first 2 children, moved from Erie County, Penn. to Crystal Lake Township in Marquette County, Wis. around 1848-1849 with Sarah's parents, Parley & Jerusha Hewitt, and at least 3 of Sarah's brothers and their families. Around 1852, the rest of the Hewitt family, except for Sarah and James, moved to Buffalo County, Wis. and settled there. James & Sarah remained in the Crystal Lake area until about 1867 when they moved to New London shortly after their son Charles was born. In 1870, they were living in Liberty Township, Outagamie Co.
The Ambrose Coon family lived next door to James & Sarah Gaffney in Crystal Lake and may have moved to Wisconsin at the same time or shortly after. Esther [Richmond] Coon was Sarah [Hewitt] Gaffney's 2nd cousin AND Ambrose' son, Edward, married Sarah's daughter, Mary Gaffney.
James died before the 1880 census and the minor children went to live in different homes, probably of family friends. Marcus "Mark" was living with Edward & Anne Brahan in Hortonia and Charles was living with Patrick & Mary Mulroy in Hortonia. Both Edward Brahan and Patrick Mulroy were born in Ireland.
There are 3 Gaffneys on the 1796 Irish Flax Growers List - John, Owen and Patrick.
Only the children of James & Sarah who remained in the New London area spelled their name as "Gaffaney".
