Note: Between 1750 and 1756, Stephen Kelsey removed from Waterbury to Berkshire County, Mass. to what was later the town of Alford, being one of the original purchasers of the land there from the Indians.
Mr. Henry C. Warner, of Alford, Mass. wrote a brief history of that town, which is included in the History of Berkshire County, Mass., published in New York, N. Y. in 1885. In this he says that the town was settled between the years 1751 and 1760, among the original settlers being Stephen Kelsey, Sr., Daniel Kelsey, Stephen Kelsey, Jr., Abel Kelsey, Reuben Kelsey and others, adding that most of the early settlers were from Connecticut. The first town meeting was held in Feb. 1773 when Stephen Kelsey was chosen one of the constables and collectors. In 1776, 1777, 1778 and 1781 Daniel Kelsey was one of the Selectmen.
Stephen is mentioned in the town records as a deacon in the Congregational Church, but the early Church Records are lost. Stephen Kelsey was buried in an old cemetery in the south part of the town.
Mr. Warner also contributed notes of southern Berkshire County to The Berkshire Hills, a local magazine published at Pittsfield from 1900 to 1904, where he gives the following relating to the Kelseys:
"In the records of Salisbury, Conn. in 1770, the marriage of Jonathan Kelsey and Sarah Chapman of America (sic.--Amenia, Dutchess County, N. Y., which is just across the line) is recorded, and the birth of their daughter Sarah in 1771. The couple were settlers in Alford before its incorporation, and went elsewhere for marriage because without a minister and proper town records * * * *. The Sheffield records also show that these Alford people were married in that town: Daniel Kelsey and Joanna (sic.--Jemima) Bronson in 1757. William Bronson and Esther Kelsey in 1759, and Moses Fairfield and Susannah Bosworth in 1745 * * * *. Before the incorporation (of Alford, Mass.) couples who wished to be united in marriage went down to Sheffield for the ceremony, and on the early records of that town may be found several births, marriages and deaths of people from this extreme part of the North Parish (the town of Alford, Mass. was at one time included in the North Parish of Sheffield). No doubt, also, some of the more devout inhabitants attended church at Egremont, Sheffield or Great Barrington * * * *. At a town meeting, Feby. 20, 1781, it was voted to build a meetinghouse * * * the location selected * * * was North of the road that leads from the house of Lieut. Simeon Hulbert to Daniel Kelsey's and West of the main road * * * *. But this vote of the town in 1781 * * * was not put into execution, and for 37 years there was no meetinghouse in Alford."
Berkshire County was established in 1761, and previous to that time conveyances of land in this county were recorded in the Registry Office at Springfield, Mass. In Liber Y, p. 669, of the Springfield Deeds is recorded a deed from certain Stockbridge Indians of several tracts of land to various persons, among these tracts being one that became known as the "Shawenon Purchase," now in the town of Alford, Mass. This deed, dated Oct. 29, 1756, by Joseph Innesquanland Shawenon, conveyed the land to the following persons: Timothy Woodbridge, Stephen Kelsey, Ebenezer Hamblin, Ebenezer Warner, John Hamlin, Elitha Row, Elnathan Bronson, Robert Watson, Anthony Hoskins, Micha Hoskins, Daniel Kelsey, Stephen Kelsey, Jr., Jonah Fortin and Simon Cook. This is believed to be the earliest deed on file of Berkshire County in which the name of Kelsey appears.
