Note: Hiram Grow was captured in April 1864 at Plymouth, NC along with about 450 others from the 85th NY. They were taken to Florence, SC and then to Sumter Prison in Andersonville, GA. At this time the number of prisoners at Andersonville had swollen to 30,000! In May of that year, murders, beatings and thievery within the prison reached the point that some of the prisoners went to the Confederate Commander of the camp and asked that he allow them to hold trials within the camp and punish those commiting the crimes! This was allowed by General Order # 57. About 120 prisoners were convicted and six were sentenced to hang. On July 11, 1864 the gallows built by the prisoners were ready, and the six were returned by the commander, Wirz, to be hanged. At this time, one of them broke free and ran. According to a note by James Knox Polk Coon of Co C. 85th NY, the prisoner was caught by Hiram Grow and Joseph Maxon of said Co C 85th NY, and was returned to be hanged.
Hiram Grow returned from the war a broken man in poor health. He moved to the west, (ie WI, MN) and the Dakotas. His health continued to decline and in the late 1800s he was slowly fading away. His wife died and he returned to Little Genesee and by that time he was going blind and needed constant care. He married the widow of a friend, and Civil War veteran, Sebeus Coon. He died in 1917 and is buried with Sebeus Coon and the widow of both of them in Little Genesee, NY .
