Note: OBIT: Died in this city, Monday morning, Oct. 1, 1883, James Wiley LYTLE in the 90th year of his age. Mr. Lytle was born in Salem, Washington County, N.Y., on the 2nd of August, 1794. His father was a soldier of the regular army of the American Revolutionary war, who served from the day Washington took command of the army till the close of the struggle for independence. He was in the battle of Bennington, Saratoga, the storming of Stony Point, Brandywine, Germantown and Yorktown, thus participating in the capture of both Burgoyne and Cornwallis and their armies. He wintered with the army at Valley Forge.
James W., emigrated to the town of Lisbon in January 1804, and is believed to have been at the time of his death, the longest time resident of St. Lawrence County, having lived here within four months of eighty years. The family settled on the farm, westerly corner of the cross roads at Flackville. When the war 1812 was declared and the draft came, though not of draftable age he went as substitute for one of the drafted men of Lisbon. He afterwards volunteered. He was present in Ogdensburg when it was captured by the British on the 22nd of February 1813, and was an active participant in the events of the day, having charge of a gun squad at the corner of State and Ford. He was mustered out at Sacketts Harbor at the close of the war. For services in that war he was made a pensioner.
He served an apprenticeship at the blacksmith trade with the late John L. BURHYDT, in a shop on the ground next to the residence of Mrs. C.P. EGERT, on Ford Street. In 1816 he began business for himself at the corner of Washington and Catherine streets, the same premises now occupied by his son James, in the same business.
In 1825 he joined the Methodist church in Ogdensburg and was an active and consistent Christian to the end of his long life. He inherited from his parents great physical courage and activity, and was in his younger days a leader in sports and an athlete. He was a remarkably successful fisherman and hunter and an unerring shot. Though most of his years a resident of Ogdensburg, he was from 1849 to 1872, a farmer in Lisbon. He came to St. Lawrence county when it was mostly wilderness, and lived to see it become one of the best agricultural counties in the union. With an iron constitution, he kept upon his feet till the end, taking to his bed on Saturday afternoon and expiring at 10:30 Monday morning.
His funeral will take place from his late residence Caroline street, Wednesday October 3d, at 9 a.m.

Note: He was admitted a freeman in 1657. He bought 60 acres of land from Jonathan Gilbert at Haddam, Conn. He probably removed to Haddam i 1691, but his wife did not approve of the removal, for she refused to sign the deeds, and in a deed of her dower rights in 1714, she declares that her husband left her without support and dependent on the bounty of her sons John and Moses.
