Gaffney, John (b. ABT 1798, d. 10 AUG 1878)
Note: John filed a Declaration of Intent in Columbia County, Wis. in 1854 just prior to his purchase of land there. He claimed that he migrated from the Port of Sligo, Ireland in April 1840 and that he landed at Oswego, NY, in July 1840.
He was around 40 years old and married to Eliza or Ceila Gibbons. They possibly immigrated from Ireland with infant son, John. The family lived in Sorel, Canada during the 1840's where daughters Catherine, Margaret, and Mary were born. In 1852, they moved to Wisconsin where son Patrick was born. They settled in Lewiston, Columbia County near Briggsville in 1854.
In 1860, they were living in Lewiston, Columbia, WI where he was farmin
Information about Canada appeared in an obituary following the death of "John Gaffney, Jr", in June 1924. It states that he was born on May 24 in Castleblair(sic)*, Ireland, in 1840, and that he migrated to America with his family "in the early 40's" settling in the province of Quebec. [*There is no such place, although there is a Castlebar in County Mayo.]
The family's presence in Sorel, Quebec, is confirmed by church records there that reflect the baptism at a parish church of 4 Gaffney children [Saint Pierre, Sorel, Richelieu, Canada].
