Jerome DAVIS, Civil War veteran and pioneer resident of this city, died at his home on West Beacon Ave., at 11:00 o'clock Monday morning, Influenza, with which he was stricken Tuesday, being the immediate cause of his death. He had been ailing for a long time however, so was unable to offer any resistance to the disease.
The deceased was born in New York State in 1843. In 1855 he came to this city with his parents, and had resided here and on a farm near here since that time. When the Civil War threatened to sever the union of the states, Mr. Davis, then but eighteen years old, offered his life to his country, and served three years and eight months with Co. I, 17th Wis. Infantry. He was married while home on a furlough, and after going back he served to the end of the war and was discharged as a sergeant.
He is survived by his wife, one daughter Amy and three sons, Orson of Northport, Wallace of Shawano and Frank, who has done his bit somewhere in France toward bringing this World War to a victorious end.
The funeral services were held at three o'clock Wednesday from the house, Rev. Perry officiating. The remains were carried out by old soldiers of the G.A.R. Henry Turner Post 46, of which he was a member. Flags at half-mast were held over the departing form by ladies of the W.R.C., many of whom accompanied the body to its last resting place, at Floral Hill Cemetery.
