Note: Samuel Fuller, a deacon in the non-conformist church in Leiden and New Plymouth was surgeon to the colony and came on the Mayflower. In 1623, he was joined by his wife, Bridget, who was skilled in midwifery. Their garden is notable with a wide variety of herbs useful for physic or medical preparation.
Samuel Fuller, son of Robert Fuller, was baptised in Redenhall, Norfolk on January 20, 1580. His first wife was Alice Glascock, whom he married sometime before 1613. In Leiden, as the widower of Alice Glascock, he married Agnes, daughter of Alexander Carpenter and sister of Alice Southworth (later Bradford), on April 24, 1613. She died in 1615 and he married again to Bridget Lee on May 27, 1617. Samuel Fuller was deacon of the Plymouth church and served as the colony’s surgeon. He also was deacon of the church and died in Plymouth in 1633, during an outbreak of plague.
William Bradford wrote:
. . . and in the end, after he had much helped others, Samuel Fuller who was their surgeon and physician and had been a great help and comfort unto them. As in his faculty, so otherwise being a deacon of the church, a man godly and forward to do good, being much missed after his death. And he and the rest of their brethren much lamented by them and caused much sadness and mourning amongst them, which caused them to humble themselves and seek the Lord; and towards winter it pleased the Lord the sickness ceased.
Bridget (Lee) Fuller had two children by husband, Samuel. In 1663, the town of Rehoboth requested her to serve as the town’s midwife. She died sometime after March 1, 1664.
