Note: John enlisted from Canaan, Conn. For a term of one year during the Revolutionary War. He was on active duty as a private from 2 Mar 1776 to 31 Jan 1777 in Capt. John Steven's co., Col. Charles Burrel's regt. Of the Conn. Line. This company marched to Lake Champlain and Montreal. The British took him prisoner along with his brother Randall Hewitt, at a place called Cedars. John was released 9 days later and returned to Mount Independence, near Ticonderoga, where he served his remaining enlistment.
On 18 Nov 1819, John applied for a pension for his service from the Town of Edinburg, Saratoga Co., NY. He stated in the application that he was a carpenter by trade but was disabled and unable to work from old age and a wound in his shoulder substained 15 years earlier. John had no real estate, only a few animals and utensils at that time. A government pension of $8 per month was granted to him on 17 Oct 1820.
After the war and before 1794, John settled in Saratoga Co., NY near his brothers, Joseph and Philander Hewitt. He was living in Edinburg in Saratoga Co. from 1810 to 1830. Shortly after the 1830 census was taken, John moved his family, which at the time consisted of his wife, Mahalia, and 11-year-old son, John Weaver Hewitt, to Oswego Co., NY.
