Note: He took the freeman's oath at Boston, 13 May 1640; subscriber to Major Denison's allowance - 1648;
was called "Elder". Was the deacon and ruling elder of the First Church.
[Source: Clark & Worth} John was sworn a freeman May 13, 1640; in 1642 he was Clerk of the Writs; between 1640 and 1653 he served as selectman and as deputy to the General Ct He was appointed to various committees, in 1641, to further and promote the fishing industry at Little Neck, and in 1652, to arrange for a grammar school and teacher. Elder Whipple also managed the business affairs of "the worshipful Mr. Saltonstall".
John Whipple was one of the foremost men of the town, by 1642 a deacon and by 1658 a ruling elder of First Church. His home with two and one-half acres, purchased from John Fawn before October 31, 1642, was bounded by the river and highway leading into the Common. Here the eminent people of the time such as Winthrop, Dudley, Symonds, Saltonstall, Ward, Simon Bradstreet and Ann the poetess, enjoyed his hospitality and the warmth of the great fireplaces. The house, recognized as the finest specimen of early architecture, was bequeathed by Elder John Whipple to his son John in his will prov. September 28, 1669, and by Captain John to Major John. It became the home of the Ipswich Historical Society in 1898. A direct descendant of John Whipple was Matthew Whipple, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
John Whipple married first, circa 1620, Susanna (Stacy or Clark) who died after July 13, 1661. After April 1662, he married (2) Jennet, widow of Thomas Dickinson of Rowley.
