Note: Came in the "Whale" from Southampton, England arriving on May 26, 1632. He returned to England about 1637 and returned to America in 1638 with his brother, Stephen, in the "Bevis".
Richard Dummer ( Gov. William Dummer's grandfather) came from Bishopstoke, near Southhampton, with his wife Mary aboard the vessel "Whale" in 1632. He and his wife were well to do landowners and their spirit of adventure as well as religious conviction surely spurred them to leave England. Richard
had 1 son who died in an Indian raid and when his first wife Mary died he remarried and had 4 sons. The oldest Jeremiah became a highly accomplished Silver Smith. He had 2 sons, Jeremy and William. Jeremy was a Colonial agent in London where he was highly admired. William ( later Gov. Dummer) at the age of 24 sailed to England in 1699 and remained for over 10 years. He married one of the Dummer cousins and settled in Plymouth until his wife died.
In 1712 he returned to America where he became involved in politics and was given by his father Jeremiah, houses, farms and 300 acres of land in Newbury, Massachusetts, the present site of the Academy. Legend has it that when William remarried he built the present Mansion House (currently the home of the Headmaster) for his bride and when he first brought her there mounted on his magnificent white charger he carried her right through the large front door and up the broad staircase to the second
floor. Even today on warm August nights when the moon is full the ghostly forms of the Gov. and his lady mounted in all their dignity on the white charger can be seen to repeat this heroic performance.
Gov. Dummer Academy was founded in 1763 and is the oldest private boarding school in the country. The original red schoolhouse is still on campus as is the Mansion house.
