Note: He was a farmer who settled in Ohio for a few yeas and then went to Switzerland Co., Indiana before 1833. While there, he invented and patented a superior hay press which became widely used by farmers in the midwest. His invention became known as the "Mormon press beater" because he joined the Mormon Church movement in the 1840s. He followed the church members to Nauvoo, Ill. in 1845, but disagreed with the policy of polygamy. Samuel left the church in 1847 and moved to Rochester, Racine Co., Wis.
