Note: He came to New England in the ship "Susan and Ellen" in 1635 at age 3 with his father. He lived in Ipswich, Mass. and removed to Salem, Mass. where he was hanged as a witch in 1692. It appears that his wife, Elizabeth, was also convicted, but Sir William Phipps prevented her execution by pardon.
This is the John Proctor, hero of Arthur Miller's 1950's play, "The Crucible". He was hanged for being suspected to have been an ally of Satan. He refused to admit this, although it could have saved his life. [NOTE: The 1996 movie portrays him much younger than he actually was at the time of his hanging.]
